—[BEGINNING OF TRANSCRIPT] [Maria Ngo] Welcome to The Strip Live, I’m Maria Ngo and today I have two happily married guests, but they’re also known as the “happily ever after” experts. This is Dr. Karen and Dr. Darwin, thank you so much for being here. [Dr. Karen Perkins] Thank you so much for having us! [Maria Ngo] I wanna talk about happily ever after in the workplace, because there’s some stat out there, that the majority of people are really unhappy with their work. [Dr. Karen Perkins] Oh yeah, I think it came out, it was, what, 78.6794 or whatever. I mean it was incredibly high. [Dr. Darwin Perkins] Well you know, I think it’s funny that they do these things about happiness in the workplace, when it comes right down to it, if you wanna get technical about it, somebody’s paying you to be there to do something. Why should you be happy about it? Right? You know, the other half of that is that the more enjoyable the work place is, the more you feel good about working for your employer, the better you’re going to do. That’s going to translate to everything in that company. One of the things that sets a company apart is when a costumer gets a good response from the company. How do they get a good response? It’s because some employee took their time to go out of their way to make that person happy. [Dr. Karen Perkins] And they did so because they were happy. And we spend more than half of our waking hours at work in most cases. [Maria Ngo] Probably more so, I mean in a lot of these jobs. So where does it start? Is it the corporation that needs to implement how to be happier in the workplace? Or is it the individuals within that company that should be seeking ways to be happier in the workplace? [Dr. Karen Perkins] Yes. Okay. [Maria Ngo] Thank you. Thank you for clearing that up. [Dr. Karen Perkins] It’s on both sides. And you know, you’ve got companies, you hate to think companies, but you got Herb Kelleher was Southwest and everybody knows them as the happy company. And yet look how its led over so much. And so he took a real initiative, and because he took initiative, his people took more initiative. And yeah, they had to do their part, but he had to do his part, and together they were able to form a culture that was very profitable, especially at a time for instance where the airlines weren’t, none of them were making profits. His company was able to continue growing successfully. [Maria Ngo] Yes. [Dr. Karen Perkins] And so the real thing here isn’t really necessarily who does it. Is it the corporation? Is it individuals? The real thing is that people need to realize, and they do, that there is a corporate image that has to be fulfilled, and in most cases remolded. Back in 1945, after the War, everything was hierarchy. Line of authority, all the way down, and if you didn’t sit where you sat and did what you did, then you just weren’t part of the group. [Maria Ngo] Yeah, the “Yes, Sir, yes”. [Dr. Darwin Perkins] Yeah, exactly. You’re a cog in the machine. I don’t like the machine thing, you know. Really think of it more as a body. You know, you’re a capillary, a blood vessel, something that’s very important to the body, and if that thing goes bad, the body goes bad, you know? It’s not a matter of can you kind of get by, you don’t wanna kinda get by. And that’s the reason people are so unhappy at their jobs, is because they get to that point where they say, “I can’t make a difference, why should I try?” So we go in and we help people realize that not only can they make a difference, but they do make a difference, merely by showing up. And then it’s up to them at that point what they’re gonna do with that. [Dr. Karen Perkins] They’re happy, the board of directors are happy, the upper management is happy, and everyone looks good, feels good, and life is wonderful all the way around. [Maria Ngo] And that’s how you get happily ever after in the workplace. Right? [Dr. Darwin Perkins] It’s a great start. [END OF TRANSCRIPT]
